Arrivano da lontano: vi dice qualcosa infatti Eskilstuna? Esatto, si trova in Svezia.
Perché la band è stata chiamata così?
In un'intervista del 1999, il cantante Daniel Gildenlöw spiegò, a questo proposito:
"Volevo un nome che significasse qualcosa, che fosse più di una semplice espressione figa. Secondo me, Pain Of Salvation ha un certo equilibrio: racchiude il buono (la salvezza) e il cattivo (dolore)". 

Gildenlöw non è soltanto membro fondatore e voce solista dei Pain Of Salvation, ma anche chitarrista e compositore. Il loro progressive rock è di tipo "hard" o "semihard": un prog metal con inserti poliritmici e con l'aggiunta - occasionale - di strumenti acustici, più caratteristici del folk che del metal, come il mandolino e il liuto. 

I testi sono alquanto dark: così com'è la vita, e così com'è la morte.

Nel corso degli anni, la formazione ha subito diversi cambiamenti. Attualmente i membri sono:

• Daniel Gildenlöw - lead vocals, guitar, lute, mandolin (1984−present), bass (2006-2007), keys (1990-1996)
• Gustaf Hielm - bass guitar, double bass, vocals (1992–1994, 2011–present)
• Léo Margarit - drums, vocals, percussion, mandolin (2007−present)
• Daniel "D2" Karlsson - keyboards, percussion, backing vocals (2011–present), bass guitar (2011 touring)

 Touring member:

• Ragnar ZSolberg - guitar, vocals, mandolin (2011–2013, 2013-2014, 2014-present)
