John Coltrane - The best

"Wonderjazz!" a tutti. Oggi (domenica, giorno dedicato al jazz...) torniamo a Coltrane. Ben due ore e passa di magia, grazie a questo In A Sentimental Mood & Greatest Hits: una delle tante compilation di "cold train music". Un disco ovviamente non può racchiudere tutto il meglio di questo straordinario artista (la cui produzione è sterminata e costellata di gemme), ma questo  riesce a sintetizzare bene il Coltrane "classico":

 The Best... ma non ancora tutto, ovviamente!

Una delle migliori collezioni sul Nostro in cui si è imbattuto Topolàin è questo The Best assemblato nel 2001. 

"Giant Steps", "Naima" e "Cousin Mary"- con l'apporto del pianista Tommy Flanagan e del batterista Art Taylor - cristallizzarono lo stile degli "sheets of sound" (termine coniato nel 1958 da Ira Gitler sulla rivista Down Beat per definire la svolta "improvvisazionale", unica e innovativa, di John Coltrane).

Le versioni coltraniane di brani già noti come "Summertime" (non presente in questa particolare compilation) e "My Favorite Things" sottolineano l'abilità del musicista a fare il remake di canzoni "a propria immagine e somiglianza", per dirla con il critico Eugene Holley, Jr.. 

"Equinox" e "Central Park West" - che, come gli altri brani, sono stati registrati per la Atlantic Records -, ci fanno comprendere come mai, dal sax soprano di Coltrane, scaturì tanta influenza verso i musicisti - anche a quelli dediti a generi estranei - che vennero dopo.

Ammirevole è l'impegno, in termini di studio e applicazione sui ritmi e sulle tonalità, che occuparono "Trane" praticamente fino alla sua morte (1967).

Tale musica, per la sua magica bellezza, è patrimonio dell'umanità. Godetevela e... buona domenica.

Lester (nato il 27 gennaio 1939) è uno scrittore specializzato in libri per l'infanzia. Per 32 anni (dal 1971 al 2003) è stato docente alla University of Massachusetts Amherst. Inoltre fa il fotografo.
Nei panni di musicista, ha registrato due album di folk music e di sue proprie canzoni.

... Ray Charles

 

La canzone fu registrata la prima volta nel 1960 da Percy Mayfield (che ne è l'autore) in una versione a cappella, ma fu Ray Charles a renderla popolare.

Noi italiani non avremo difficoltà a riconoscere, nel ritmo incalzante e nel fantasioso sillabismo di Ray, una delle maggiori fonti di ispirazione del nostro Celentano....

 

Su Ray Charles venne realizzato nel 2004 un film (uscito poche settimane dopo la sua morte) dal titolo Ray, magistralmente interpretato da Jamie Foxx. Qui sotto ve ne propongo il trailer in lingua originale, insieme all'esibizione di Ray Charles nel film The Blues Brothers.

 

Il testo di "Hit the Road Jack" è un dialogo fra una donna e il suo convivente, Jack appunto, il quale viene invitato a "togliersi dai piedi" e non tornare più indietro dato che è rimasto senza soldi e senza prospettive, nonostante le sue proteste e le sue promesse sul fatto che un giorno o l'altro egli sarebbe riuscito a "rimettersi in piedi".

50 anni di Beatles

Il 5 ottobre 1962 usciva il primo 45 giri dei Fab Four: "Love Me Do"

Esattamente mezzo secolo fa usciva il primo 45 giri dei Beatles, "Love Me Do" (con "PS I love you" come retro), prima pubblicazione ufficiale di un gruppo che aveva avuto il suo battesimo un paio di anni prima ad Amburgo, nella bolgia del quartiere a luci rosse della città anseatica tedesca. A un ascoltatore distratto, la canzoncina può non sembrare niente di eccezionale, ma c'è l'armonica a nobilitarla: il primo di una serie di geniali accorgimenti atti a fare del pop una forma d'arte a tutti gli effetti.
Quel debutto discografico segnò l'inizio di un incredibile viaggio musicale che avrebbe portato il quartetto formato da John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison e Ringo Starr a rivoluzionare il mondo della cosiddetta musica d'intrattenimento.

Il duo di compositori "Lennon & McCartney" firmò, fra il 1962 e il 1970, in tutto circa 200 canzoni (quasi tutte rimaste scolpite nella memoria collettiva) e, insieme a Harrison e Richard Stark alias Ringo Starr, sono stati l'esempio di quello che sarebbe ben presto diventato il mondo del pop e del rock: messaggi di cambiamento, di fraternità e amore universale... sogni spesso però schiacciati dalle becere regole del business.

E' indubbio che i Beatles, più di qualsiasi altra band, segnarono un'epoca - grazie anche ai loro mentori Brian Epstein & George Martin. Ciò avvenne in meno di otto anni (la dichiarazione ufficiale dello scioglimento della band è del 10 aprile 1970): i Beatles lasciarono il segno non solo nel mondo delle note ma anche nel costume, nella moda e nella pop art. I "quattro ragazzi di Liverpool" sono ritenuti, ancor più a distanza di 50 anni, un fenomeno di comunicazione di massa. "Lennon & McCartney" divenne un marchio di fabbrica, così come la Apple, etichetta discografica fondata dai Fab Four e dal loro entourage.

Parlando di cifre, i Beatles sono gli artisti con il maggior numero di hits in assoluto: oltre un miliardo di dischi venduti (!). Nel 1965, i quattro divennero, poco più che ventenni, Baronetti dell'Ordine dell'Britannico... (Leggi altro sui Beatles qui.)

"Donna Donna" - la storia

Il titolo della canzone, nell'originale in yiddish, è "Dana Dana". La composizione - assai nota in svariate parti della Terra - tratta di un vitellino ("Kälbl") che sa di essere condotto al macello ma è impossibilitato a difendersi. Di contro, la rondine è padrona del proprio destino; lei simbolizza l'autonomia e l'autoresponsabilità, principi basilari della libertà. Gli ultimi due versi dell'originale dicono: "Solo coloro che posseggono ali come una rondine / Non cadranno mai nella schiavitù."
La canzone riflette la situazione degli ebrei al tempo del Terzo Reich. Composta proprio in quel drammatico periodo (per il musical Esterke, 1940-41) da Aaron Zeitlin (testo) e Shalom Secunda (musica), porta un titolo apparentemente senza significato; in realtà, la parola "Dona" (o "Dana") proviene dall'yiddish "Donaj", forma breve di Adonai, una delle denominazioni di Dio nel Vecchio Testamento.
