The following databases are useful for popular music research and are available to visitors in the Library and Archives facility.
  • Academic Charts Online
    Academic Charts Online (ACO) is a database that compiles popular music chart data about albums and singles from the Americas, Europe, and some Asian territories. Data is provided by Billboard, The Official Charts Company, and other sources. Sophisticated tools allow you to compare charting positions by artist, title (singles and albums), countries in which titles charted, label, and more. ACO also includes instant links to leading popular music journals, including the Journal of Popular Music Studies, Popular Music, and Popular Music and Society; and databases such as RILM and Rock's Backpages.
  • Academic Search Complete
    This scholarly collection offers full text coverage of information in many areas of academic study including: archaeology, area studies, astronomy, biology, chemistry, civil engineering, electrical engineering, ethnic and multicultural studies, food science and technology, general science, geography, geology, law, mathematics, mechanical engineering, music, physics, psychology, religion & theology, women's studies, and other fields.
  • African American Music Reference
    African American Music Reference brings together 50,000 pages of text reference, biographies, chronologies, sheet music, images, lyrics, liner notes, and discographies which chronicle the diverse history and culture of the African American experience through music. The database is constantly expanding to include comprehensive coverage of blues, jazz, spirituals, civil rights songs, slave songs, minstrelsy, rhythm and blues, gospel, and other forms of black American musical expression.
  • American Song
    Hear and feel the music from America's past right up to recent additions including Motown, Jimi Hendrix, the Mamas and the Papas, and other artists from the rock era. There are songs by and about American Indians, miners, immigrants, slaves, children, pioneers, and cowboys; songs of Civil Rights, political campaigns, the Revolutionary War, and the Civil War; and every great American genre is here—from folk and blues to country, gospel, and rock.
  • AP Images
    AP Images is one of the world's largest collections of historical and contemporary imagery. The AP Images collection is updated every minute of the day and includes entertainment, fashion, news and sports coverage from The Associated Press and a diverse selection of content partners.

    ArchiveGrid is a collection of nearly two million archival material descriptions, including MARC records from WorldCat and finding aids harvested from the web. Archival collections held by thousands of libraries, museums, historical societies, and archives are represented in ArchiveGrid. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Library and Archives material can be found here.
  • Arts & Humanities Citation Index
    Index and cited references for articles in the arts and humanities. The database covers 1,144 arts and humanities journals and individually selected, relevant items from over 6,800 science and social science journals.
  • Biography Reference Bank
    Provides biographical information on approximately half a million people, from antiquity to the present, along with thousands of images.
  • Business Source Complete
    Covers 3,200 scholarly business journals in all disciplines of business, including marketing, management, accounting, finance, international business, econometrics and economics. Good for researching the business of music.
  • Contemporary World Music
    Delivering the sounds of many regions from every continent, this collection contains reggae, worldbeat, neo-traditional, world fusion, Balkanic jazz, African film, Bollywood, Arab swing and jazz, Indian classical, fado, flamenco, klezmer, zydeco, gospel, gagaku, and more.
  • Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive
    An archival research resource containing the essential primary sources for studying the history of the film and entertainment industries, from the era of vaudeville and silent movies through to 2000. The core US and UK trade magazines covering film, music, broadcasting and theater are all included, together with film fan magazines and music press titles. Magazines have been scanned cover-to-cover in high-resolution color, with granular indexing of all articles, covers, ads and reviews.
  • Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online
    The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online is the first comprehensive online resource devoted to music research of all the world's peoples.   • International Index to Music Periodicals Full Text
    This database provides indexing and abstracts for several hundred international music periodicals from over 20 countries, plus full text for more than 140 of the indexed journals. The database currently includes over 770,000 records, the majority from the most recent ten years of publication.
  • LexisNexis Academic
    Wide range of news, business, legal, medical, and reference information from nearly 5,000 sources. The service covers newspapers, magazines, wire services, federal and state court opinions, statutes, federal regulations, and SEC filings. News updated daily, wire services several times a day.
  • MLA International Bibliography
    Provides a classified listing and subject index for books and articles published on modern languages, literatures, folklore, and linguistics. This database annually indexes over 50,000 journal articles, books, and dissertations.
  • Music Index
    A comprehensive guide to music periodicals and literature featuring digitized content from 1970 to present. Contains cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts of articles about music, musicians, and the music industry for more than 480 periodicals, as well as book reviews, obituaries, news, and selective coverage for more than 200 periodicals. Comprehensive coverage of the music field makes Music Index an invaluable resource for both scholar and novice.
  • Music Online
    Music Online is the broadest and most comprehensive online music resource that cross-searches all of the Alexander Street Press music databases. These include African American Music Reference, American Song, Contemporary World Music, the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online, Jazz Music Library, Smithsonian Global Sound, and more.
  • Newspaper Source
    Selected full text for 28 national (U.S.) and international newspapers, including USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, The Washington Post, The Times (London), The Toronto Star, etc. Also contains selected full text for more than 200 regional (U.S.) newspapers, including The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, The Detroit Free Press, The Miami Herald, The New York Daily News, The San Jose Mercury News, etc. In addition, full text television & radio news transcripts are provided from CBS News, FOX News, NPR, etc.
  • Oxford Music Online
    Oxford Music Online is the access point for Grove Music Online, The Oxford Dictionary of Music and the Oxford Companion to Music. Other products offered here are not part of our subscription.
  • Popular Culture in Britain and America, 1950-1975
    Popular Culture explores the dynamic period of social, political and cultural change between 1950 and 1975. The resource offers thousands of color images of manuscript and rare printed material as well as photographs, ephemera, and memorabilia from this exciting period in our recent history. The Library and Archives of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum contributed over 7,000 items from its collections to the project. The database allows you to explore an interactive chronology to learn a wealth of fascinating facts, take a tour of the site's visual resources, and watch video footage to experience the spectacular sights and sounds of the period for yourself.
  • ProQuest Dissertations & Theses A&I
    This database is the world's most comprehensive collection of dissertations and theses from around the world, spanning from 1861 to the present day.
  • RILM Abstracts of Musical Literature
    Comprehensive international guide to writings about music. Covers articles from more than 5,200 journals, books, conference proceedings, dissertations, reviews, and catalogs in over 100 languages.
  • Rock's Backpages
    Rock’s Backpages is the largest database of rock journalism online, featuring 17,000+ articles on numerous artists. The archive draws on numerous publications from Creem and Trouser Press to Rolling Stone, and from New Musical Express and MelodyMaker to MOJO. It is fully searchable by artist, genre, writer or keyword (allowing search by album or single title, date, etc). Rock's Backpages also features a library of over 100 audio interviews.

  • Safari Tech Books Online
    This database offers electronic books relating to a multitude of subjects, but music specific resources include copyright, the music business, and the recording industry.
  • Smithsonian Global Sound
    Smithsonian Global Sound includes the published recordings owned by the non-profit Smithsonian Folkways Recordings label and the archival audio collections of the legendary Folkways Records, Cook, Dyer-Bennet, Fast Folk, Monitor, Paredon and other labels.
  • WorldCat
    Catalog containing more than 57 million records describing books and other items owned by libraries around the world. Materials covered are books, manuscripts, websites and internet resources, maps, computer programs, musical scores, films and slides, newspapers journals and magazines,sound recordings, videotapes. Each record contains information on which libraries own the item. Updated daily. Covers earliest print materials to the present.
